My friend Frank worked as a counselor to addicts for many years and tried to follow the Iron Rule. He explained that the rule is to "never do for somebody what you can let him do for himself."
When I worked with a student who was confined in a wheelchair I sought to follow this rule. One day he asked me to push him so he could climb a curb. I encouraged him to build up speed so that he could hop onto the curb by himself. And he did!!
