I was there at the hockey arena on the night that Travis Roy played his first and last game for Boston U. Having grown up in Maine which (unlike Minnesota) doesn't produce many hockey players, Mr. Roy was never expected to be able to play in the top collegiate league. He was well aware of this and justifiably proud of being a member of the B. U. hockey team which has won a number of NCAA championships.
When Mr. Roy got injured he knew it was the kind of injury that would prevent him from ever playing hockey again. But he never felt sorry for himself. On the contrary, his first words to his father who rushed to be by his side were "Dad, I made it!!!!".
