Outward Bound

It is June1985 and I am a participant in a 28 day Outward Bound Course on Hurricane Island in Maine. All the members of the group I'm a part of are required to plunge daily into the frigid ocean. Quite a way to start the day!! A week passes and the other members of the group have grow weary of my shenanigans and stage an intervention. I'm furious at them for calling me on my behaviors but I listen to what they have to say. I hear that they feel I'm not being a good team member. I learn that my self-centeredness is hurting the group. It's a very uncomfortable learning experience but this lesson is burned deeply into me, so deeply that I remember it clearly today as if it happened a few months ago. I learn that when people care they speak up and call me on my behaviors. They don't keep silent and enable me to continue on the wrong path.
