Like many folks I like things to stay exactly as they are. Change is uncomfortable and I don't like feeling uncomfortable; however, I'm never going to grow if I'm unwilling to be uncomfortable sometimes.
When I was a child I was living in a city that was in a violent crisis. I did a very uncomfortable thing by participating in a busing program that was unpopular with many people at the time. At times I was afraid of being hurt by stones that were launched at our bus. By participating in the busing program I became friendly with other children from many different religions and races. Taking a sometimes dangerous ride on a school bus gave me the chance to overcome racial prejudices that would have limited my ability to form relationships with young people who didn't look like me.
