Ernie Grunfeld came to the USA at age 9 and had a tough time due to not understanding English too well. Other children used to make fun of the way that he spoke. I had a tough time in the place where i spent my childhood. I got called some hurtful names like "spic". I didn't always understand all of the slang of the town I lived in. For example when I was a paperboy I had a customer tell me he was going to give me a "sawbuck". Damned if I knew what that meant!
What Ernie and I had in common was love for a sports. I could understand the rules of the games like hockey and baseball. I also could earn the respect of my peers by playing hard and well. I'm so glad that I got the chance to play the games I love! They gave me a chance to fit in a place where I felt like an outsider.
