Mastery of Hardships

I get food for thought from Helen Keller quotes. She believed that happiness came from the "mastery of hardships". There is no way for me to avoid hardship, sad events are a part of life. Recently,  I got some unwelcome news about a kind, avuncular gentleman who was my former coworker. His name was Jesse and he was killed by his nephew. The details are disturbing. Violence is an ugly thing and ugliness is part of reality.

I use a prayer to help me with this ugliness, it's called the Serenity Prayer. This is my tool. I ask God for help so that I can accept Jesse's passing.  It is so hard because I feel angry that a man who was so good could be killed so viciously by his own nephew. Jesse was a man who encouraged me to work hard. He lived as a positive role model, a hard worker with a good attitude. He was cheerful and helpful. Sadly the man he tried to help killed him.
